This book is about mathematics and not a book on mathematics.The book will be of interest to persons who have knowledge of school level mathematics and want to be made aware of its fascinating and charming aspects which they might not have been exposed to, or might have missed, in their school days. The book is also intended to motivate the youngsters into feeling attracted, fascinated and excited
about mathematics instead of dreading it.
The book is primarily a collection of school level topics of mathematics which lend themselves to relatively simple mathematical analysis. An effort has been made to present certain basic areas of school mathematics in a way that may provide intellectual stimulus and excitement to the reader. The book has been written at a level where it can be appreciated by school students as well as common people having school level background of mathematics. It has been the intention of the author to inform, entertain and make common people comfortable with mathematics instead of getting scared of it. Justifications and explanations have been kept simple so that these can be appreciated by general reader. Author has chosen to be somewhat light hearted in the analysis of certain problems so that these are easily comprehended and appreciated even by non-mathematicians. It seemed to be a good idea to be not serious about everything.
I have not touched upon all major aspects of even school mathematics. Instead an effort has been made to take the reader on a 'walking tour' of certain exciting and fascinating aspects of popular areas of school level mathematics in order to provide the reader intellectual stimulus and excitement about the subject. It is the wish
of the author that more and more persons in the society share such beautiful morsels of mathematics.
The book has been divided into two parts. The first part is titled 'Charm and beauty of mathematics'. In this part an effort has been made to highlight charming, exciting and fascinating aspects of school level mathematics and its applications. It is spread over the first eleven chapters. The second part of the book is titled 'Mathematical diversions and recreations'. It introduces the reader to a variety of games and puzzles based on mathematics which provide not only good pastime
and refreshment to the mind but also help in sharpening the mental faculties for critical and fast thinking. This part of the book contains five chapters.
It is hoped that after reading this book common persons, particularly youngsters, may discard their dread of mathematics and the elders may change their perceptions of the subject and start regarding mathematics as a subject to be appreciated and admired and not detested.
Dr. C. Mohan, the author of this book is a retired Professor of Mathematics from IIT Roorkee, India, and is at present working as Prof. Emeritus in Computer Science in th Ambala College of Engg.& Applied Research, Ambala, India.
